                     Advent unwrapped

As you have drawn us to your cradle of wondrous love, O God,

draw us together in this place, that we might pray for your people and your world.

Today, we give you thanks for the gift of your child, Jesus Christ, who in birth, life, death, and resurrection revealed your unending love for all people and opened to us the purpose and promise of life together.

We give thanks also for the gifts of this season: hope for the vision of justice you promise, even in the midst of despair; for peace within and among your people, even in the midst of conflict; joy found in reunion and celebration, even amid the challenges of this life; and love, with the power to transform and

heal all things, even in the midst of brokenness.

We pray for those who still long for these, your gifts, God of Love: for those who will spend this season alone or anxious… for those who grieve an empty place at the table this year… for those who are ill, in body or in spirit… for those in hospital and in care… for those who endure the terror of conflict and oppression…        (Silent Prayer)

People in Partnership

Our gifts for Mission & Service offer people of The United Church of Canada an opportunity to visit our global partners through the People in Partnership program. An opportunity to “come and see” our Mission & Service global partners can deepen our understanding of what it means to be in partnership.

The People in Partnership program goes deeper, combining the experience of what we are called to be as a United Church and how we are to live out the greatest commandment of loving one another and loving our neighbours through a program of conversation and integration. Those who have gone on one of the “come and see” experiences have come back changed. The experiences offer a way to see the world with new eyes and a transformed heart.

The result is a life-changing view of the world and Mission & Service as the heart and soul of The United Church of Canada. Opportunities for short-term and longer-term experiences are available. To learn more, visit People in Partnership on The United Church of Canada website, www.united-church.ca.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

WE COME TO WORSHIP

MUSICAL CAROL      ----Led by Coughlan United Church Choir

CHORAL INTROIT  “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”  - VU #1   (1st & 2nd verses only)

GREETINGS & CALL TO WORSHIP

One: The light and Peace of Christ be with you.

All: And also with you.

One: God’s Spirit has led us here;

All: And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is PEACE.

One: God’s Spirit has led us here;

All: And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is HOPE.

One: God’s Spirit has led us here;

All: And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is JOY.

One: God’s Spirit has led us here;

All: And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is LOVE.

One: There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in the air,

All: And we know it’s the Spirit of the Lord.

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

God of Hope, Peace, and, promise, be with us throughout this Advent season and draw us ever closer as we journey together toward the stable and the birth of your Son, our

Saviour. Bless us and our worship that we may accord you with praise and honor today and always. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

LIGHTING OF ADVENT CANDLE

                         -         Ruth & Catherine Ruth Davidge

Voice 1: We began Advent last Sunday by lighting the first candle, the candle of Hope.

We light it again today to remind us that Christ is coming to fulfill God’s promises.

(Light the first Candle)

Voice 2: Today we light the second candle, the candle of Peace. The prophet Isaiah said,

“Comfort, comfort my people” to a nation anxious about invasion and exile, as he

foretold the coming of the Prince of Peace. Our world is still filled with violence and

abuse, where families are torn apart by war and children are used as soldiers.

Isaiah’s words continue to speak to us that Jesus will bring us to an everlasting

      peace.    (Light the second Candle)

Voice 1: Mary and Joseph found no room in the inn to give birth to Jesus, but we can heed

John the Baptist’s command to make room in our hearts. Wherever there is war or

mistrust between peoples, families, or our own hearts, God is present and leading

us to imagine new ways of living in peace.

Voice 2: Christ is our only hope, and our peace is found through him. We light this candle to

remind us of Jesus’ life-giving peace to all who trust in him. We light it in honor of

those who live the Gospel truth that war does not make one great: the peace

workers who risk much so that others may live free of fear. Let us pray. . .

All:    We’re in trouble, Holy God. So many in the world do not know peace in their

countries or in their hearts. We use weapons of steel and barbed words to

wound one another. We seek balm for our restless hearts in things that only

make us more wounded. Open our hearts to Jesus so we may have the peace

of his holy presence and live it in our unpeaceful world. Save us from outside

violence and inner turmoil. We need you. Come, peaceful God, come. Amen.

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING SONG:

    “A Candle Is Burning”    - VU# 6

A candle is burning, a candle of peace, a candle to signal that conflict must cease; for Jesus is coming to show us the way, a message of peace humbly laid in the hay.

THE FAITH COMMUNITY IN CONFESSION  (All)

Advent God, forgive us when we pay more attention to satisfying our own needs, than seeking you and your will for our lives—for being more interested in possessing the material things of life, rather than your spiritual gifts. Turn our lives around so that we are looking in the right direction - towards you.  Only then can we hope to recognize the signs of your presence in the world.  This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE & MERCY (1 Cor.1:5-8)
One: Hear the good news:  In Jesus Christ we have been enriched in every way, in

everything we say and in everything we know.  In addition, through God's grace we do not lack any spiritual gift as we  wait with anticipation for Jesus to be revealed.  He

is the one who will keep us strong to the end, so that we shall be blameless on the day

          of our Lord Jesus Christ.

All: Thanks be to God!

Young Adult Spiritual Development

Many ministries these days are wondering what they can do to serve young adults. In 2015, a small team of youth and young adult leaders in Southern Ontario met at Five Oaks Education and Retreat Centre to envision a resource that could be used by the church to accompany young adults as they discerned questions of vocation and meaningful work.

The hope was to create an opportunity for spiritual development that was more advanced than youth confirmation, but more accessible and broad than the discernment process for paid accountable ministry. The Discoverment Process was born out of those conversations. It launched as a free online curriculum in early 2017. The Discoverment Process is a seven-session small-group program that brings together young adults finishing high school, or in their 20s, with adult mentors to explore questions of faith in the 21st century.

With additional funding from Mission & Service via a Vision Fund for Flourishing Ministry Programs’ grant, the Discoverment Process is currently developing a workbook for individual use, as well as a series of retreats where young adults can engage with the Discoverment materials over a weekend.

Mission & Service supports programs like the Discoverment Process that offer a way for young adults to discern what God is calling them to.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT     “Advent of Hope”  December 1, 2019          11:00 a.m.

Welcoming Team: Winifred Elms & Marilyn Winsor

ADVENT WELCOME!

Welcome to the first Sunday of Advent- the Advent of Hope! Advent -a time of waiting, watching, listening. A time of remembering, anticipating. A time of renewal and wonder. The beginning of a new year. Each year, we celebrate the season of Advent in the weeks leading up to Christmas. We read the words of the prophets, we tell the stories of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, the angels, the Magi. We put ourselves back in that time and place of watching and waiting for the Savior of the world, expectant and hopeful.  Today, we come together to seek the Advent God who brings us Hope. May our worship together help you find Hope in Christ amidst life’s challenges; may the Hope in Christ grant you peace. Let us worship the God of Hope.

WE COME TO WORSHIP

(*Please stand as you are able)

GATHERING MUSICAL  ----   Pre-Sing      Led by Senior Choir

WORDS OF WELCOME

PROCESSIONAL DRAMA    – Gerald Winsor as Prophet Isaiah

(Enters the sanctuary from the back and say ...)

Prepare the way of the Lord,
Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
(He  continues to center of sanctuary, pounds floor, continues speaking to all:)
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    And every mountain and hill made low;
The uneven ground shall become level

And the rough places a plain.

(The prophet walks to the altar, completes the verse holding up staff in both hands to heaven facing the congregation: )

Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
And all people shall see it together,
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
(“The Prophet” leaves after placing the staff across the Advent Wreath.)

CHORAL INTROIT      “Prepare the Way of the Lord” – VU #10

Prepare the way of the Lord! Prepare the way of the Lord!

Make a straight path for him, make a straight path;

prepare the way of the Lord!

LIGHTING OF ADVENT CANDLE – Rev. Nancy & Gary

One: A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.  The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

All: He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.

One: Our Hope is in the Lord our God - and in the One whom he has sent to be judge of the living and of the dead - the one who has come forth from Jesse and whose return in glory we even now await.

All: Our hope may falter - but God never fails.  He sends forth light

to encourage us and to light our way as we await the fulfillment

of the promises made to Israel and to all the earth.

(Lighting the First Candle)

SONG:  VU# 6      “A Candle Is Burning”

A Candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,

a candle of hope in December's dark night.

While angels sing blessing from heaven's starry sky,

our hearts we prepare now for Jesus in nigh.

*CALL THE WORSHIP

One: November ends, December begins.

All: We find our beginning and our ending in God.

One: Month after month, our God attends us and supports us.

All: For God’s company, we offer thanks and praise.

One: Let us worship the God who gives us Jesus Christ.

All: God who is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the Living One

and our Redeemer, now and forever!

THE CHURCH IN CONFESSION

One: Because it is so hard to wait, it is not easy to live through Advent's days. But watch what God does during this time. God waits for us to turn from our old ways to find the right paths; God waits for us to admit what we have done, and failed to do, so we might be forgiven and graced with new life. Let us confess our sins  to the One who waits - for us!

ALL: It is never easy for us to confess our sins, Waiting God.

There are the hurts we have caused to our families and friends, which we would like to forget. There are those we believe are impossible to love, and so we don't try. There are people who live on the edge of our society, and we ignore their cries for help.  Forgive us, God who comes near to us. When we have lost our way, show us yours. Lead us in humility down the streets of your kingdom. Teach us your truth, so we might be able to keep your Word, revealed to us in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

(Silent Reflection)

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE AND MERCY

One:  God does not remember our sins, but does remember the promises which have been made to us. God does not shame us, but lifts us to new life.

All: Lead us in your hope, O God, and teach us your love. You are the God of our days, we wait for you to come to us. Amen. (written by Thom Shuman, and posted on Lectionary Liturgies)

Spiritual Care

Paul said, “I’m going to die on February 23rd at 10:30 a.m.”

Paul has cancer. He was given three months to live but he has already surpassed that timeline by a month. In the meantime, his body continues to waste away and he is in constant pain. Here is a story from a United Church hospital chaplain about Paul. “I have been visiting Paul for several weeks in the palliative care unit of the hospital. He has called me in on this particular day to tell me that he has requested medical assistance in dying, and the date and time for the procedure are set.

“I sit and listen while he talks about the decision he has made, how he came to it, and how his family members are reacting to it. Our conversation that afternoon is heartfelt and real. There is no place for pretense or false bravado in the presence of imminent death. It is a sacred moment. We say a prayer together. My eyes tear up as we say our goodbyes. I know it will be the last time I see him.”

A hospital is not only a place for physical care; it is very much a place for spiritual care. It is here that difficult decisions, life and death decisions, are made on a daily basis. Illness can turn lives upside down. Hospital chaplains are specifically trained to help patients and their families find ways to cope spiritually and emotionally in such times of personal crisis and upheaval.

“My name is Val Cottrill and I work with the South Saskatchewan Hospital Chaplaincy of The United Church of Canada helping to bring spiritual care into the hospitals of Regina. This essential ministry could not happen without the generous giving of members and adherents through Mission & Service. Thank you for being a part of our ministry.”

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION  (unison)

O Lord, we call you the Alpha and The Omega, the beginning and the end, King of kings, and Lord of lords, the ground of our being, the light of our souls, very God of God. Yet often our hearts are far from you.  We confess that we turn aside from your path and shut our ears to your voice of wisdom and our eyes to where your hand would guide us. Too often we seek good things without considering that you are the source of all that is good and true and lasting - and so we hurt you, we hurt others, and we hurt ourselves. Forgive us we pray.

Our gifts for Mission & Service support ministries like Our Place Society in Victoria, British Columbia, which offers programs for those on the margins that make everyone feel like family.

One of the proudest moments of the Victoria Pride Parade was when a young pre-op transgender woman said that she never felt brave enough to walk in the parade until the day she marched with the staff and family of Our Place.

It says a lot about the unique downtown centre for Victoria’s most vulnerable that this woman felt included in Our Place’s definition of family. It is one thing to preach hope and belonging, but quite another to live it.

Loving our neighbours is at the core of Our Place, as all who come through its doors become family.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

MINUTES FOR MISSION

Our gifts for Mission & Service provide opportunities for children to explore how they can change the world, one step at a time.

High Country United Church in Mono, Ontario, became a place of fun and laughter when it hosted the GO Project Adventure Camp for children in Grades 2 to 7. Children explored their faith and justice through unique service projects. One program involved shopping at a local grocery store and then delivering the food and diapers to the Orangeville Food Bank. Participants’ eyes were opened to what it means to need a food bank in their community.

This program is presented as a day camp experience with trained camp staff facilitating. It offers fun camp experiences, such as games, songs, crafts, small groups, delicious food, and a fun time in a safe, intentional community. It is a great way to engage the children of your congregation in what it means to be called to love our neighbours.

Thank you for your gifts for Mission & Service that provide opportunities for children to explore faith in a fun and safe environment.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

 ARMISTICE/ REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE

November 10, 2019        11:00 a.m.

Welcoming & Offering Team: Gary Fisher & Cal Penney

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!

WELCOME ALL to this special service of remembrance. It is Remembrance Day once again, and we will as a nation acknowledge the sacrifice of the people of the Armed Forces throughout history. However, as a community of faith today, we will be taking some time to reflect on the sacrifices of Canadians throughout the ages. Members of The United Church of Canada have served in every major conflict since the church’s formation in 1925 and still do today. And so it is appropriate for us to affirm the lives lost in war and bring them to mind here with us as we worship in freedom and peace. Today we also welcome in worship our church members who served our country in various capacities, Laurence Pike CPO 2 (Ret), Douglas King, Able Seaman, Navy(Ret) and Calvin Penney,  PO 2 Navy Reserve (Ret).

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One:    On this Remembrance Sunday we gather to pray

All: for a world where no one will learn war anymore.

One: On this day when the guns once fell silent,

All: we gather to pray for peace to reign in every heart, home and nation.

One: On this day of hope,

All: we come before you, God,
to remember all those who gave their lives so we could be free.

One: In this time of story, song, and prayer, help us to catch a  vision of how the world could live together.

All: And so, let echo the old prayers—make us channels of your peace.

One: In that spirit, let us join our hearts in song.

OPENING PRAYER (Responsive)

One: Almighty God,

All: Grant that we who gather here today may pay fitting tribute and honor to the memory of those who have died in the service of their country.

One: May we be so inspired by the spirit of their love and courage that, forgetting all selfish and unworthy motives,

All: we may live only to your glory and to the service of your people. May we who desire peace be willing to work for justice. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*HYMN   “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”  -VU 684

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

One: Almighty God, we thank you for bringing us together this Remembrance Sunday to recall with tenderness and respect those who lost their lives from this community and the many thousands farther afield in the wars of the last century.

All: We pray for all those still caught up in conflicts across the world
and acknowledge what may be our own confusion about war
and how we might participate in creating an enduring peace.

One: Help us to meet with you in these moments of worship,
Make us ever mindful of your goodness toward us,
and strengthen us to be aware of the needs of others.
As we pray for peace, may it start with peace in our hearts.     (Silent Reflection)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON AND MERCY

One: Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life,

All: Hear our prayers for all this day, and help us to live in love and service. Amen.

OUR RESPONSE

GATHERING OF OFFERINGS  - Minutes for Mission

*PRESSENTATION OF OFFERINGS & DOXOLOGY

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Unison)

Our gifts are tokens of our intentions: to remember war’s horror, to bring peace, to end conflict, to counter suffering, to raise hopes, to bring new life. Bless our gifts, O God, for they reflect the Sacrificed One, Jesus, Who gave his life on the cross. Amen.

WE REMEMBER

PRAYER OF REMEMBERING

One: God of love, peace and justice, it is your will for the world that we may live together in peace. You have promised through the prophet Isaiah that one day the swords will be beaten into ploughshares. Yet we live in a broken world, and there are times that war seems inevitable. Let us recognize with humility and sadness the tragic loss of life that comes in war. Even so, as we gather here free from persecution, we may give thanks for those that have served with courage and honor.

All: God, we praise you for those that are willing to serve. Bless them as they serve with honor, pride, and compassion. Do not let their hearts be hardened by the actions they must take. Strengthen their families. Keep them surrounded

in your love and peace. We thank you for those that put the welfare of others ahead of their own safety. Let us all be inspired by their self-sacrifice in service to those who needed protection.

One: God, we praise you for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. We ask that you comfort those that still feel the pain of their loss. Keep us mindful that you have promised to comfort those that mourn.

All: God, we praise you for granting us these freedoms. Let us honor those who have served by working for peace. Let us never forget those that have served, and let us never let go of your promise of peace. In the name of Jesus who prayed with his disciples the prayer…Our Father, who art in heaven….(The Lord’s Prayer)

LAST POST       * MOMENT OF SILENCE           *REVEILLE

Words of Remembrance:              - Laurence Pike

One: They shall not grow old,
as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning.

All: We will remember them.

*SONG:      “Ode To Newfoundland”

When sunrays crown thy pine-clad hills, And Summer spreads her hand When silvern voices tune thy rills, We love thee smiling land We love thee, we love thee, We love thee smiling land.

When spreads thy cloak of shimm’ring white,  At Winter’s       stern command, Thro’ shortened day and starlit night;
We love thee frozen land, We love thee, we love thee,

We love thee frozen land.

When blinding storm gusts fret thy shore, And wild waves lash thy strand;  Thro’ spindrift swirl and tempest roar;  We love thee wind-swept land,  We love thee, we love thee, We love thee wind-swept land.

As loved our fathers, so we love, Where once they stood we stand; Their prayer we raise to heav’n above;  God guard thee Newfoundland;  God guard thee, God guard thee,  God guard thee Newfoundland.                  (written by Sir Cavendish Boyle)

*COMMISSIONING and BENEDICTION                                                      The worship has ended – the Service has begun. Go in                         peace, do justice and love kindness and walk humbly with one another and your God. In the name of our Living Creator, Redeemer- Christ, and our Inspiration, Holy Spirit. Amen.

*SUNG RESPONSE:              Go  Now in Peace  -VU 964

Go now in peace, go now  in peace, May the love of God surround you everywhere, everywhere you may go.

MISSION AND SERVICE

MINUTES FOR MISSION

Our gifts for Mission & Service support theological education in seven theological schools, including Emmanuel College in Toronto, Ontario.

Aside from The United Church of Canada ministry training degrees, Emmanuel College offers interfaith programs in Muslim studies and Buddhist studies. These programs have created a more enriched program of study and diversity in the student population. Here is the story of one of these students:

Captain Barbara Helms was enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces as a chaplain of the Muslim tradition in October 2017. She will be serving with the 30th Field Artillery Regiment (33 Canadian Battle Group, 4th Canadian Division). She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree specializing in Muslim chaplaincy, offered through the University of Toronto, the Toronto School of Theology, and Emmanuel College. Thanks to your gifts to Mission & Service, the college has implemented inter-faith programs such as Islamic Studies. Padre Helms has been involved in teaching, community outreach, youth ministry, hospital pastoral care, and inter-faith dialogue. She is grateful for the opportunity to be the first female Muslim chaplain, and finds that military chaplaincy is a place where she can serve her regimental family.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

Youth Pilgrims

Thirteen Youth Forum pilgrims were on a journey during the summer of 2018. After work and orientation in their home Conferences, they travelled east to Newfoundland. With their two young adult leaders and a global partner, these dedicated young people visited each Conference of the United Church. They stopped in Oshawa, Ontario, in July to participate as commissioners at the 43rd General Council and then continued their pilgrimage, ending in British Columbia in mid-August.

Building on the theme of Rendez-vous 2017, these young people deepened their understanding of what it means to Be the Church/Soyons l’eglise in this time of change and challenge.

The youth were selected by peers from their home Conference at a Youth Forum Winter Retreat held in February 2018. At the retreat, 60 youth gathered to learn what a remit was, gain insight into how business would be carried out at General Council, and immerse themselves in the issues and concerns facing the United Church. They also spent time in worship, small groups, and played games, and other activities.

The pilgrimage invited participants to deepen their experience as they visited Indigenous communities, met migrant workers, learned about justice issues related to mining and fair trade, witnessed the work of social justice ministries and camps, and worshipped and celebrated with many communities of faith across the church. They came home changed, challenged, and ready to lead in ministry. How will you walk with a Youth Forum pilgrim from your region?

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service..

MISSION & SERVICE

Minutes for Mission

Thank you to our

Ministers!

In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul writes about God empowering church leaders “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). What are the ways that a minister has helped this community of faith to equip the saints for ministry, or to build up the Body of Christ in this place?

Today, we offer gratitude for the many ways that our ministers help to build up the Body of Christ through their leadership and ministry. Thank you for the sermons. Thank you for the worship gatherings. Thank you for the educational opportunities for all ages. Thank you for the ways you equip people for discipleship. Thank you for the home and hospital visits. Thank you for your outreach and justice leadership. Thank you for the prayers and care. Thank you for your faithfulness and your call to be a minister in The United Church of Canada.

Thanks to our gifts to Mission & Service, we support our ministers through theological education training and continuing education. Mission & Service also provides support to your community of faith through pastoral relations at the regional council and the denominational council. Thank you for your gifts to Mission & Service.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

Today we are joined in spirit together with our sisters and brothers around the world in celebration of the World-Wide Communion Sunday.  At the Lord’s Table we celebrate the Love of God that knows no bounds. At the Table of the Lord all are welcome to dine in and experience the gift of God’s love and grace.  We hope that the worship today will bless you in a very special way; may it help you spiritually to face the tasks for the week ahead. Please come back to join us in worship and praise! Let us worship!

Loving God, your steadfast love never ceases and your mercies never come to an end.  Your touch turns deserts into pools of living water.  As you embrace the land, its yield abounds. With wisdom you implant goodness and justice.  We proclaim your virtue.  We thank you for breaking down the walls that divide us one from the other and the barriers that separate us from you.  Be with us in this time of worship as we and our brothers and sisters around the world lift up your most holy name; we ask it through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.  AMEN.

Merciful Lord, we confess that with us there is an abundance of sin, but in you there is the fullness of righteousness and abundance of mercy. We are spiritually poor, but you are rich and in Jesus Christ came to be merciful to the poor. Strengthen our faith and trust in you. We are empty vessels that need to be filled; fill us. We are weak in faith; strengthen us. We are cold in love; warm us, and make our hearts fervent for you that our love may go out to one another and to our neighbors. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CELEBRATING WORLD-WIDE COMMUNION

*COMMUNION HYMN   VU 469           “We Gather Here”

THE INVITATION  (Minister)

On this World Wide Communion Sunday, we gather at God’s table, joining with disciples of Christ in many lands and places. This table is for all people. Christ invited poor and rich, male and female… sinner and saint to his table. At that table, he invited the ordinary to become extraordinary. He didn’t demand a profession of faith, or an R.S.V.P. Invitation. He only asked that people come. So, we too invite all to Christ’s table. Wherever you come from. Whoever you are. However you believe in Jesus Christ. Wherever you are going. Come and be fed. Come and be refreshed. Come and be filled with new life!

(Today, when it is time, people will be invited to come forward. The Bread and the   cup of grape juice will be served by the elders and we will partake the elements one at a time.)

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

One: God be with you
All: And also with you.
One: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to God.
One: Let us give God our thanks and our praise.
All: With joy and celebration we say, “THANK YOU, God!”

One: We do thank you, Creator-of-All. For all things in our lives.
For all people in our lives. For life itself! We give you thanks for the many ways we are

transformed, by the touch of another of your children -both the ones we meet and the

ones we will never know.

All:     Thank you, Loving God!
One:   We give you thanks for the many ways we are transformed, by the touch of your creation

–for the two and the four-legged  animals; the ones that fly in the air, the ones that swim in

the   waters. We give you thanks for the earth and the sea and the stars.
All:   Thank you, Loving God!
One:   We give you thanks for all who have come before us.

Grandmothers and Grandfathers -by blood and by faith, who have loved us and taught us,

by their stories and by their lives. They have shared your love in their love. We     celebrate that they are a part of your great community of  saints -of which we, too, are a

part.
All:   Thank you, Loving God!
One:   All creation thank you, Loving God, and we join them, saying,
All:   Holy, holy, holy God! God of love and life -heaven and  earth are full of your glory,

hosanna in the highest! Blessed is  the One who comes in God’s name!  Hosanna

in the highest!
One:   We realize that we don’t always live out your love.  Sometimes, in fear, we turn away.

Sometimes, in anger, we   turn away. Sometimes, in apathy, we turn away.      Sometimes, not even realizing it…we turn away.
All: But you don’t let us stay away, God! Time and time again, you call us back. You are

forgiving ...you are  faithful!   Hallelujah!

you   call  to us, God, thank you. For filling us again, thank you! Help us to be, all that you know we can be. In Christ’s name, in your love, we ask it. Amen.

MINUTES FOR MISSION

The United Church Women (UCW)

Love and Strength

The vision statement of United Church Women (UCW) includes a call to continuous prayer and learning, leading to action—and United Church Women across the church have faithfully answered that call for over 55 years!

“As women of faith… we believe in affirming and strengthening ourselves, both individually and together through creative study, prayer, and action,” says the UCW’s vision statement. During the UCW’s 55th anniversary event in 2017, support for a project at the Morogoro Women’s Training Centre in Tanzania was celebrated. The women have supported the training of hundreds of traditional birth attendants, who have saved half a million women and children from dying in childbirth.

Our gifts for Mission & Service support the UCW as it learns about our changing world. Imagine the strength of women who have learned about and taken action on gender justice and inclusion, truth and reconciliation, intercultural ministries, students and theological education, climate justice, the work of global partners, inter-faith initiatives, refugee support, and so much more!

The United Church’s Song of Faith states, “We sing of a church seeking to continue the story of Jesus by embodying Christ’s presence in the world.”

We are thankful that the UCW has been an example of what it means to truly love our neighbours!

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

MISSION & SERVICE

Minutes for Mission

We give thanks for over eight years of giving through the Gifts with Vision catalogue. Every gift is developed by one of our Mission & Service partners and each one truly makes a difference! As we look forward to the new Gifts with Vision catalogue, let us hear some of the amazing things that have been accomplished thanks to your giving through Gifts with Vision.

You have made so many good things possible through your gifts: clean water projects in Congo, Nicaragua, and Zambia; summer camp experiences for more than 200 children across Canada; education and safe spaces for children around the world; food for people who are homeless in Canada; grocery gift cards and warm clothing for remote Indigenous communities; food, shelter, and education for displaced persons in Kenya, the Philippines, Colombia, and Jordan; Indigenous cultural renewal here in Canada; a culture of peace in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East; and projects in reconciliation and Indigenous reclaiming of language and traditions--just to name a few!

Your generous support for Mission & Service means that Mission & Service partners receive core funding for their programs. Your gifts through Gifts with Vision provide additional support for Mission & Service partners and ministries for selected projects.

Without Mission & Service, Gifts with Vision projects would not be possible. Through your support of Mission & Service and Gifts with Vision, you provide so much hope, both here in Canada and across the world.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

Our worship this morning is slightly non-traditional. The message will focus on building community as we welcome God’s Presence and re-covenant with one another and God. Everyone is given a piece of cloth as you entered the church today. We will use the cloth during worship as part of our re-covenanting service. Let us join our spirits in worship.

MESSAGE THROUGH BUILDING COMMUNITY

God’s Community under Construction”

(As we begin another year in the life of our church, we want

everyone to feel welcomed and part of this faith community, a

community “under construction”. We gather together to worship

and learn- to grow in God’s way. To symbolize that we are always changing and growing, we gave each of you a piece of building material (cloth) when you came into the church today. So, in a moment, we would want you to turn and meet the people sitting around you. As you exchange names and greet one another, find out how long each of you have been coming to this church. Then we would like you to symbolically join your cloth together making a chain. Then turn to another group close to you, greet them and then join your set of chain to make a longer chain. When all the chains are connected, everyone is asked to form a big circle holding on to the  chain and move towards the altar where the blocks of different ministries of Coughlan United Church are placed. The chain represents us as individuals who have come together to celebrate God’s presence with us. And the blocks represent various ministries that we have in the church. We will now sing the hymn “We Are one in the Spirit”)

*HYMN        “We Are One in the Spirit”

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord;
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord;
And we pray that all unity will one day be restored.
Chorus:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,
yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand;
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand;
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land.

We Will work with each other, we will work side by side;
We will work with each other, we will work side by side;
And we’ll guard each man’s dignity and save each man’s pride.

 All praise to the Father, from whom all things come;

And all praise to Christ Jesus, God’s begotten Son.

And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one.

*PRAYER FOR RENEWING THE COVENANT ( Each ministry will be named at this time)

One: We are all connected one to another, and with God’s help we are able to support and encourage each other in our learning and in our teaching, in our giving and in our receiving. Let us pray…

All: You have called us together, God into this family and you have promised to be with us. We thank you for your love and for each other. We begin a new season together with promises…. We promise to be a family. We promise to give new-comers and old-timers, children and adults and equal place in the family. We promise to respect each other  and to care for one another. We promise to learn from each other and to teach each other.

We promise to study the Word, and to serve you in the world. Be with your church, loving God, as we journey together into the future. In the name of Christ who is the head and foundation of the church, we pray. Amen.

Kidzone

Our gifts for Mission & Service support programs for children and families living in community housing areas like Ardglen in Brampton, Ontario.

The Journey Neighbourhood Centre looks like every other store in the strip mall where it is located, but once you enter, you encounter a different world—one filled with art, laughing children, enthusiastic volunteers, and interns from the Social Work program at Ryerson University. One of these interns is Maria, who came to Toronto as a teen from Colombia to live with her father.

“At first, I didn’t like it here,” says Maria, sitting at the table preparing snacks for the children who would be arriving from school to participate in the KidZone program. “Over time I have come to really love this country, and I wanted to do something to make a difference in the world. That is why I chose social work.” Maria and the other interns speak passionately about the centre and the children who come through the door. “They are just wonderful!” Maria exclaims.

Your gifts offer children and families in community housing a place to come to share in food and fun.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

MINUTES FOR MISSION

Spiritual Support to Students

A row of old houses on Rue MacKay in Montreal, Quebec, is part of student life at Concordia University. One is home to the Concordia Multi-Faith and Spirituality Centre. The Rev. Ellie Hummel is the United Church chaplain on staff at the centre, and she works with chaplains from the Baha’i, Muslim, Sikh, Pagan, Buddhist, and Jewish communities as well as various Christian denominations.

The centre is a safe space for students to talk one-on-one with chaplains, share meals with fellow students, work together on service projects, and hang out during exam time. It holds a drop-in conversation group called Spirituali-TEA each week. In June 2017, the centre celebrated the completion of a mural by fine arts student Laura Douglas, who explored the relationship between people and the environment. Like the centre itself, the mural is a beautiful expression of that exploration. Concordia Multi-Faith and Spirituality Centre offers students a place to explore and question faith, and a safe space to make a difference and simply be. Its service projects include helping with a community garden in the downtown core of Montreal.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
